A song created by two rock legends
The story behind Because the Night is particularly interesting.
The song began during Bruce Springsteen’s recording sessions for Darkness on the Edge of Town in 1977. Springsteen had already developed the music and chorus, but the song was still unfinished. Producer Jimmy Iovine, who was working with both Springsteen and Patti Smith at the time, later brought the track to Smith.
Patti Smith then completed and reshaped the song, writing new verses around Springsteen’s existing foundation. She later connected the lyrics with a night spent waiting for a phone call from her partner Fred Smith, which helped give the song its personal sense of longing and desire.
The finished version appeared on the Patti Smith Group album Easter in 1978 and became Smith’s biggest hit, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 in the UK.
That unusual creative history is one reason the song still stands out today: it brings together Springsteen’s anthemic rock songwriting with Patti Smith’s more poetic and personal approach.
A song that keeps being rediscovered
Over the years, Because the Night has been covered and reinterpreted many times.
One of the best-known later versions came from 10,000 Maniacs, who performed the song for MTV Unplugged in 1993. Their recording became another major success and reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
That lasting popularity shows how adaptable the song is. Whether performed as classic rock, acoustic music or a modern vocal cover, its melody and chorus remain instantly recognizable.
Nicoletta now adds her own interpretation to that long history.

Supporters help make regular new covers possible and can also take part in choosing future songs through community polls.
The latest vote for the October cover produced a rare result: Luca Turilli – “Warrior’s Pride” and Serenity – “Lionheart” both finished the first poll with 35% of the vote.
That meant the Ko-fi community was asked to vote again in a final round between the two songs.
This time, the result was extremely close: “Warrior’s Pride” won with 52%, while “Lionheart” finished with 48%.
Coming next: “Warrior’s Pride”
The winning song, Luca Turilli – “Warrior’s Pride,” originally appeared on his 1999 solo debut King of the Nordic Twilight. The album is closely associated with the symphonic and melodic side of European power metal.
That means October will bring another noticeable change in style. After the classic rock atmosphere of Because the Night, the cover series will return to a much more direct power metal direction.
With this new cover, Nicoletta Rosellini adds another well-known classic to her growing catalogue of covers. And thanks to one of the closest Ko-fi votes so far, Warrior’s Pride is already waiting as the next chapter in October.
