Paradise Lost (Symphony X Cover)

Stormrage EP

STORY

Paradise Lost is Alterium’s heartfelt tribute to one of their greatest influences – Symphony X. Known for their complex compositions and powerful storytelling, Symphony X set a high standard in progressive power metal. With this cover, Alterium honors that legacy while bringing their own voice and emotional interpretation to a modern metal classic.

A Bold Homage

Choosing a cover is never a casual decision for Alterium. As with their take on Bismarck by Sabaton, the band carefully selects songs that challenge them musically and emotionally. Paradise Lost was no exception. Originally released in 2007, the song explores the themes of regret, downfall and spiritual longing, all inspired by John Milton’s iconic poem.

Russell Allen’s intense vocal performance in the original made the track a milestone in progressive metal history. For Nicoletta, whose vocal range bridges alto and mezzo-soprano, taking on this song was both a personal challenge and an artistic honor. Drawing inspiration from Allen while staying true to her own vocal identity, she offers a performance that is rich, controlled and emotionally resonant.

Musical Interpretation

Alterium’s version of Paradise Lost remains faithful to the structure and spirit of the original, yet adds a distinct cinematic and melodic layer that reflects the band’s symphonic roots. The guitars retain their weight and precision, while the orchestration subtly enhances the atmosphere, giving the song a slightly more ethereal edge.

Rather than overembellishing, the arrangement allows the emotional core of the song to breathe. Nicoletta’s vocals carry a haunting quality, especially in the verses, where sorrow and reflection take center stage. The track opens with a gentle piano line and subdued vocals, creating a moment of quiet intensity before any guitars appear. This soft and melancholic introduction sets a deeply emotional tone and highlights the vulnerability behind the lyrics.

As the track builds toward its powerful chorus, the full force of Alterium’s sound unfolds – not as imitation, but as sincere homage. The melodic structure and careful pacing provide a strong contrast to the EP’s title track Stormrage, which strikes with high energy and thunderous riffs. In Paradise Lost, Alterium explores the other side of their musical identity – one rooted in elegance, atmosphere and emotional depth.

A Bridge Between Worlds

Covering Paradise Lost is more than a tribute. It’s a bridge – between generations of metal, between musical styles, and between personal influence and artistic expression. For Alterium, it’s a way to connect with their roots while continuing to define their voice.

In reimagining this masterpiece, the band proves that honoring the past and shaping the future can go hand in hand. Paradise Lost stands as both a nod to the giants who came before and a testament to Alterium’s ambition to walk their own path with courage and respect.

Behind the Song

Lyrics

In the cold misty morning
Gleaming rays awake the dawn
Here I stand, a stranger in this land
Does your conscience betray you?
Falling from grace, feel the sun on my face
Does desire still hold true?

Mystified by her beauty, does the hunter pity his prey?
Under starless skies all love must die, and fade away

Take my hand, divine or damned, make a stand
Seize the day
Yours or mine, damned or divine
Draw the line, come what may...

Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye to paradise

My yearning is silenced by angelic skin of white
Love conquers all, though heavens fall this fateful night

Yours or mine, damned or divine
Draw the line, serpentine...
Love is a tragedy
All that I have, all that I'll ever need is right here inside
Let the winds of freedom be my guide

Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye to paradise

Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye to paradise

Say goodbye, goodbye

So I've cheated and I've lied
Been the victim of foolish pride
And I've begged and I've crawled
And I've battled it and bled for it all

So I'll savor the downfall of paradise

Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye to paradise

Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye to paradise

Looking down from ethereal skies
Silent crystalline tears I cry
For all must say their last goodbye to paradise
